Brushing your teeth with a dry mouth

For many people, brushing is just a normal, easy part of their oral health routine. But for those with a sensitive mouth – whether caused by dry mouth, gum recession, or oral conditions – this everyday routine can be painful. The good news is that with the right technique, tools and toothpaste, you can clean effectively and without discomfort.

Choose a toothbrush that’s gentle but effective

Hard bristles can irritate delicate gums and enamel. A soft-bristled brush or an electric brush on sensitive mode is ideal. Oralieve 360⁰ Tooth and Mouth brushes are a great choice. The soft bristles provide a gentle clean for sore or sensitive mouths and the small head can access hard-to-reach areas whilst cleaning the mouth simultaneously.
Don’t forget to replace your brush/head every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles fray, to prevent unnecessary abrasion.

Pick a toothpaste designed for dry and sensitive mouths

Not all toothpastes are created equal, especially for people with dry mouth. When saliva is reduced, there’s a higher risk of tooth decay, gum problems and discomfort, so the right toothpaste makes a real difference.

Many standard toothpastes contain ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which can foam and irritate sensitive oral tissue whilst also being quite strong in flavour.
Look for toothpastes that are mild, SLS-free and designed specifically for dry or sensitive mouths. These often contain fluoride to strengthen enamel and moisturising ingredients that help maintain comfort during brushing.

Another beneficial ingredient to look for is xylitol. It’s a natural sweetener that helps maintain a healthy pH balance in the mouth and discourages the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Xylitol also supports moisture retention, making brushing more comfortable for people with dry mouth.

Oralieve Ultra Mild Toothpaste ticks all these boxes. It is SLS-free and gentle yet effective. Formulated with xylitol and 1450 ppm fluoride, to protect against tooth decay as well as a mild mint flavour which is suited for dry or sensitive mouths.

Adopt the right brushing technique

Use small, circular motions rather than forceful back-and-forth scrubbing. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, spending about two minutes to reach every surface. Brushing too hard can actually damage enamel and cause further sensitivity.

Don’t forget to floss

Floss between all adjoining teeth at least once daily to remove plaque and food debris. Make sure you do it as gentle as possible to avoid irritating the gums.

When you shouldn’t brush

It is advised to not brush immediately after consuming food or drink. Instead, wait for 30 minutes to allow saliva to naturally neutralise acids and remineralise the enamel.

Comfortable brushing is possible

With the right tools and a gentle approach, brushing doesn’t have to hurt. Pairing a soft brush with an SLS-Free toothpaste like Oralieve helps protect your teeth, support your oral health, and keep your mouth comfortable every day.
