Frequently asked questions
Your saliva flow naturally decreases when you sleep, making dry mouth symptoms more noticeable at night. Mouth breathing or snoring can also make it worse.
In addition, if you use a CPAP machine at night this can also lead to a dry mouth.
Certain medications can have an effect which reduces the amount of saliva the body produces.
Many prescription and over-the-counter medicines can have this effect. If taking a combination of medications, you are more likely to experience dry mouth.
If you notice that your mouth feels dry after starting a new medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist and consider using products like Oralieve to stay comfortable and protect your oral health.
Dry mouth can be linked to age, medications, medical conditions, or lifestyle factors like snoring or dehydration. If you are unsure, we recommend speaking to your GP, Dentist or Pharmacist.
Although saliva contains a lot of water, it also has several other important components not present in water play an important role in maintaining moisture. In addition, the consistency of saliva means it is retained in the mouth for longer than water.
Saliva plays an important role in cleaning food and bacteria from the mouth and can help remineralise teeth. Dry mouth can increase the risk of plaque formation which can lead to bad breath and tooth decay.
If you suffer from dry mouth, you may find your mouth is sore or sensitive. It is therefore important to choose a mouthwash that is alcohol free but also one that contains fluoride to protect your tooth enamel. Oralieve Mouthrinse for Dry and Sensitive Mouths has a mild mint flavour and will not irritate a dry mouth.
The symptoms of dry mouth and how long it will last will depend on the cause. Products such as Oralieve Moisturising Mouth Gel and Spray can help relieve symptoms.
The level of saliva naturally decreases in the night but if you have a dry mouth you may find you wake with symptoms. Use of Oralieve Moisturising Mouth Gel or Oralieve Moisturising Mouth Spray before bed can help soothe and moisturise the mouth during the night.
High blood sugar levels can affect saliva production and may lead to a dry mouth and a thirst. If you suspect you may have diabetes you should speak to a healthcare professional.
