One of the questions we most commonly get asked is why mouths get dry at night, and more importantly what you can do about it.
During the night your mouth naturally produces a lot less saliva than during the day – potentially less than half the daytime amount. So, if you are already suffering from a dry mouth [perhaps due to the medication you are taking or an underlying health condition] you might find yourself waking up at night more frequently to have a drink of water. With increased fluid intake often comes more trips to the toilet, all of which can mean quite a disturbed night.
To help combat night-time dry mouth you can take a small [pea-sized] amount of Oralieve Moisturising Mouth gel and rub it into the soft areas of your mouth about 20 minutes or so before you head to bed. This will moisturise your mouth and help it from drying out.
You can also ‘top up’ if you need during the night with a couple of sprays of Oralieve Moisturising Mouth Spray, which will help keep the mouth hydrated.
Whilst it is important to keep hydrated, water will only provide temporary relief for a clinically dry mouth. Oralieve products are designed to provide lasting relief so you can get a good night’s sleep.
It’s also worth considering your choice of toothpaste. A lot of toothpastes contain foaming agents, typically sodium lauryl sulphate [SLS] and these can actually dry the mouth out as well – especially at night-time. Oralieve Ultra Mild non-foaming toothpaste will clean and protect your teeth but because it does not contain SLS, it won’t dry your mouth out!
